The point at which a stimulus begins to produce an effect. A house for the moments between one state and the next: the shower, the sink, the moment before sleep.

It is pressed by hand, in small batches, and set on the floor of a shower. The water wakes it. Cold arrives inside the warm. The menthol first, a clear line drawn through the steam, then eucalyptus and peppermint, green as a leaf split open. The room becomes the accord.
There is a moment between one state and the next in which nothing is asked of you.
A doorway. A shower. The moment before sleep.
The Practice is the keeping of those moments.

Where the threshold comes from.

The stone at the foot of a door, the threshold of a house and of a temple. Sacred: a bride was carried over it so that her foot never touched the line between one life and the next.

The first measurements of the threshold of sensation, the point at which a stimulus becomes something felt, were published here. Science gave the threshold the Latin name limen, and everything beneath it a name of its own: subliminal, what the body registers before the mind does.
